Landing at Athens International Airport, you've got four real ways to get into the city, and they're not actually competing on the same thing. Here's what each one costs, how long it takes, and who it's actually right for.
€9 one-way, about 40 minutes to Syntagma. It's the fastest and cheapest way into the center, full stop. The catch: it doesn't run between roughly midnight and 6:30am, and it drops you at a station, not your door. Fine with one bag. Considerably less fine with three suitcases and a toddler.
€5.50, running 24 hours, but slower, 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. The only public option that works for a genuine middle-of-the-night landing.
A fixed government rate, €40 during the day, €55 at night, to the city center. Straightforward, no negotiating, and the meter only kicks in once you're heading somewhere outside that zone. The queue at the rank can run 15-20 minutes at peak arrival times, and you're getting whichever driver is next in line.
Taxi overcharging is the most frequently reported tourist scam in Greece, and the airport run is where it happens most. The tricks are consistent: a driver claims the meter's "broken" and quotes a flat rate at two to four times the legal fare, or takes a deliberately longer route to run up the meter. Just this month, Greek police arrested a taxi driver for charging a passenger €175 for a ride that legally costs €40.
Most drivers are honest, and the official rank at Exit 3 is genuinely safe. But if you do go that route: insist the meter starts the moment you leave, know the fixed fare is €40 day / €55 night to the city center by law, and never accept an offer from anyone approaching you inside the terminal, they're not licensed.
